12/8/99 9:15am Head cleared, I'm in the hotel chilling out to Bach and actually studing a little. I need to check out at noon and the drive back to Boston after tonight's show (and be at work by 6!), so whatever pictures I manage to snap won't be posted for at least a day.
12/8/99 12:29am, (after the first Portland Phish show) I liked the show tonight. Not as if I could ever not like a Phish show, but this one was solid in all aspects. The band was tight, they seemed happy to be back in Portland, and the small (for a East Coast Phish show, the smallest with the exception of Lake Placid) crowd was most enthusiastic.
Here's the setlist, as best as I can decipher my (creatively-assisted) scribbling:
* I gotta say that Phish's new songs (Jennifer Dances, Heavy Things, and Bug) are particularly disturbing to me. They're just so awfully pop. Oh how I'd kill for a return to that wicked 1997 funk. Where whole sets were one continuous block of music, simply segue-ing from badass groove to another. I undertstand that it all goes in phases, more so with Phish than anyone else, but jeez guys- WTF are you doing?
But I'm being unfair. Overall, the show was totally killer- if you took out those three songs, for me at least, I would have been in complete heaven. And remember- an average Phish show blows away most bands' best efforts.
Anyway, I'm at the hotel, briefly, and about to head over. I'll to take as many pics as I can, but I've discovered, over the year and a half I've been doing the tourcam, that people tend to get pretty freaked out when they see flashbulbs in the lot. So, I don't think you'll see that much, except for maybe some long-distance shots.
I'll try to take a bunch in the daytime tomorrow before the the 12/8 show.
Look for an update afterwards (about 1am EST, 12/8). Till then, peace.
