Columbus is the last leg of my summer tour. Although I'm going to a bunch of fall shows too, this'll be it for a while. Re-immersion back into society is always a little difficult, and I'm not looking forward to getting up for work at 4:45am. Anyway, look for me stumbling around the venue, or sitting here. | 7/15/00 (after show #1) Quite a fascinating show. Very good, don't get me wrong, but at the same time it was a little puzzling to me. There were moments of absolute energetic brilliance, but also complemented by bouts of clear restraint. That they were playing with extreme intensity was of no doubt; you could see they were very much into it. They were VERY attuned to and complementary of each other in one of the most complex manners I've ever seen. The thing that really struck me was there were a couple of points where they could have gone in two directions, and at almost every one they chose the quieter & more restrained. Don't get me wrong, I loved the show. The Foam with all of the bubbles was really great. On the other hand, though, there was the first set's rain that resulted in the band subsequently having to stop the show for about 15 minutes. I think that took away from the overall energy somewhat, and made it a little harder to build up momentum. But both the crowd and band made the absolute most of it, if for no other reason than due to the fact of the subliminal knowledge that this was the second to last show of the summer tour. A great tour at that. They've been SO on this tour- though sometimes playing quietly and softly, filled with a passion I haven't seen in a very long time. I'm happy that I'm here and wouldn't trade being here for anything. And I hope tomorrow's show is insane. peace, mike 07/14/2000 Polaris Amphitheatre - Columbus, Ohio Set I (5min 23secs): Sample in a Jar* Rain delay (26 min) Set II (1:22): Punch You in the Eye > Timber (Jerry), Gotta Jibboo > Boogie on Reggae Woman, Stash, Bouncin' Around the Room, Foam, Dog Faced Boy, Farmhouse > Taste, Golgi Apparatus Set III (1:19): Mike's Song -> Frankie Sez > David Bowie, Waste, Sand > Lizards, Weekapaug Groove Encore (0:17): The Inlaw Josey Wales, Driver, Guyute * - set called on account of rain; band announced that they were taking a break until the rain slowed down 07/16/2000, 2:50am (after show #2) All i can say right now is WOW. What an absolutely immense, intense show. It could've been taken straight from the bowels of their most hardcore 1997 porno-funk phase. Deep, segue-d, and flowing like no tomrrow. Well, in a way there wasn't- they're done. :( More thoughts as time and motivation allows, but bottom line is get this show on tape! |
