You're (virtually) at
Phish @ Mountain View CA (Oct 6 & 7, 2000)
(a mere -3014 & -3013 days away!)

This is it- Phish's final shows for the foreseeable future. to say that they're going to be intense & emotional is a huge understatement. For better or worse (I'm voting for better) these will remain etched in people's minds for a very long time. More later...

10/7/00 11am: Woke up this morning sad. Really sad. This is it- Phish is taking (my guess is) two years off. I'm not angry at them; they've been going nonstop for 17 years and are more than deserving to take a breather. But this band has literally changed my life in so many different ways. Turned me into what I think is a much better person than beforehand. I love the music, I love the community, I love the feeling. Sure there are tons of other great groups out there, but nothing else, no other band, quite matches what Phish does for me.

There's going to be an empty spot in my soul until I can see them again. I don't know what I'm going to be like then- I'll be a few years older, in a new job, and who knows what type of social, relationship, and monetary state. This may be it, at least in it's present incarnation.

I wish Phish the absolute best of luck. And I extend to them my most sincere gratitude for what they've done. Thank you, guys.

Look for me stumbling around the venue, or sitting here. You can also listen in on the tourphone. (Sorry, no TourCam for any fall shows except for Mansfield & Columbia. Though maybe I'll make an exception for these shows. )
Post (first night) show: Excellent show! I thought Irvine was great, but this one was even better. Absolutely outstanding first set, followed by a huge second set with Bob Weir for 3 encore songs. (though I now know why rock stars don't wear shorts on stage. Jeez Bob--- gotta tone up, bro). But pale, whiteboy legs aside, it was great to see Phish enjoying themselves so much. They deserve it.

It was such an intense show I don't know how they could top it tomorrow. I'd almost say they couldn't top it, which leads to me believe even more the rumors of an Abbey Road cover show. That would rule.

Off to bed... MUCH partying to be done tomorrow. peace, mike

10/8, 1:30am (post day 2) It's over. No more Phish for who knows how long. It was a good show. I'll admit not great, but good. Very very good. I think by any other standard, people would easily regard this show as one of the best of the tour. But there was so much anticipation surrounding it that I'm rather not surprised that there was a little something left to be desired. People were talking about an Abbey Road: they really thought it would happen because the second set ended so early. But no, we instead got a huge normal set. People also thought that Neil Young was a shoe-in for the encore, especially when they started YEM. After all, YEM is what Phil Lesh come out to last year. But instead we got a great plain & simple YEM. No complaints there, just a little surprising. Then Paul played the Beatle's Let It Be, which drive people wild thinking that they'd come back out. But no, we were just asked to simply Let it Be and go home.

Like I said, by any other standard this would be widely regarded as a great show. But in the light that it's their last for (I think two) years, and the huge hype surrounding it, I gotta admit that I walked away wanting more.

But then again, Phish always manages to twist things around so I never know what to expect. That's what keeps me coming back, that's what I love about them... I never know what to expect.

Best of luck, guys. I'll miss you. Ya goddam mindfucks.
