Been to Phoenix before, though never for a show. It's hot as fuck. I think this is going to be the surprise show of the tour. Many people are going to skip this one, and instead head straight from Vegas to San Diego. Big mistake, people... Phish always has a "shit-I-missed-it" show... Utah '98 where they played DSOTM, Boise 99's massive blowout... And the Toronto shows... Gonna be a rough haul to get there & back, but I'm not gonna miss it. Look for me stumbling around the venue or sitting here. You can also listen in on the tourphone. (Sorry, no TourCam for any fall shows except for Mansfield & Columbia. No coverage anywhere else... ) | |||

PRE SHOW: Boy am I tired. Last night at Vegas as totally killer, then I went to Les Claypool afterwards. Didn't get back to the hotel til 4, then I had to get up early for the massively boring drive to Phoenix. So it may be a sedate night for me. (Ah who the fuck am I kidding- I'm gonna rage like I do at every Phish show, catatonic or not!) My call for tonight: a massive breakout performance. They had two nights of pure fucking around, they're gonna have 2 more nights off after this... THIS is going to be THE show of the fall. AFTER SHOW: Thoughts... thoughts... Well, I think the show was pretty damn good. If was really forced to admit it, I'd imagine that this is what I would have expected them to play (rather than the aboveformentioned dream). I was hoping for a massive funk breakout, but I instead got a pretty close second- some extremely jammed out tunes. Sure, interspersed with a bunch of quiet songs, but after what I can only imagine was their all-out binge in Vegas, this show was rather welcome, both by themselves and the touring fans. 10/01/2000 Desert Sky Pavilion - Phoenix, Arizona Soundcheck: Back at the Chicken Shack, Ginseng Sullivan, Twist (multiple times) Set I (1:12): First Tube > Wolfman's Brother, Back on the Train, Beauty of my Dreams, Vultures, The Inlaw Josey Wales, Prince Caspian, Llama*, Lawn Boy, Runaway Jim Set II (0:58): Roses are Free, Piper** -> Guy Forget*** > When the Circus Comes > Camel Walk, Driver, David Bowie**** Encore (0:06): Waste * - Trey introduces the band, including Jon as "Bob Weaver" and himself as ?; he then encouraged people to start clapping along while he clapped in an off rhythm before slapping himself on the forehead; he then encouraged people to slap the forehead of the person next to them, but no one did ** - unfinished *** - first time played; pronounced "Gee-For-Jay"; Trey on keyboards; similar to recent versions of "Catapult"; included lyrics something to the effect of "I never met a man I could not forget as much as Guy Forget"; soundchecked back as far as February 1993; a Mockingbird Foundation interview with Dave Abrahams includes a question asking who Guy Forge is, to which Dave answers that he's "Some tennis player guy" **** - Trey set up a feedback loop, took off his guitar and began swinging it around while manipulating the pitch using his foot pedals; as a result Page played the ascending riff at the end because Trey hadn't put his guitar back on in time |
