The very long prime number below is a representation of the DeCSS program. DeCSS allows you watch a DVD on your computer. The MPAA, which invented DeCSS, doesn't want you to do this. In addition to buying DVD's from them, the MPAA expects you pay for the right to watch it, too! It's like being forced you to buy a pacemaker even though you have a perfectly healthy heart. So what does this really large number have to do with the MPAA? The explanation's a bit technical, but it's explained as well as can be here. The simple explanation is the MPAA muscled the courts into saying not only is it illegal to pirate DVD's (which is completely reasonable), but that it's also illegal to know how it's done. That's the part many people have a huge problem with. To use another analogy, it's like making it illegal to know that running your car in a closed garage will kill you. That huge number below is the evil DeCSS program. But how can a number be made illegal, you ask? The MPAA has essentially forced the courts to say so. So... take a good long look. Call it geek civil disobedience. And know, in a small way, you're doing your part to keep America free. (And more than anything else, it's a way to say 'fuck you' to the MPAA's greed. Yes, they absolutely have a right to make money, but not to rape the public. And that's exactly what they're doing with their CSS program) |
